“One of a kind”: Beloved Laverne & Shirley star passes away

Actress Cindy Williams, best known for her role as Shirley on the popular sitcom Laverne & Shirley, opposite Penny Marshall’s Laverne - has died.

Cindy’s children, Zak and Emily Hudson, confirmed the news in a statement through their family’s spokeswoman, Liza Cranis, on Monday. Cindy passed away in Los Angeles after a brief illness.

“The passing of our kind, hilarious mother, Cindy Williams, has brought us insurmountable sadness that could never truly be expressed," Zak and Emily said.

“Knowing and loving her has been our joy and privilege. She was one of a kind, beautiful, generous, and possessed a brilliant sense of humour and a glittering spirit that everyone loved."

Michael McKean, the sole surviving main cast star of Laverne & Shirley, paid tribute to his former co-star in a statement to the Los Angeles Times, telling them that she “was so talented and so game.”

“When she and Penny were cooking,” he went on, “there’s no one who could touch them. She was a truly kind woman with a big heart and I’m very sad she’s gone.”

McKean, who played Lenny Kosnowski on the hit show, also took to Twitter to reflect on his time with Cindy, offering everyone some insight into what she was like behind-the-scenes.

“Amen,” he concluded, “thank you, Cindy.”

Backstage, Season 1: I'm offstage waiting for a cue. The script's been a tough one, so we're giving it 110% and the audience is having a great time. Cindy scoots by me to make her entrance and with a glorious grin, says: "Show's cookin'!". Amen. Thank you, Cindy.

— Michael McKean (@MJMcKean) January 31, 2023

Cindy was also known for her work in George Lucas’ 1973 comedy drama American Graffiti, and Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 mystery thriller The Conversation. But it was her time spent as Shirley Feeney in the Happy Days spinoff Laverne & Shirley that shot her to stardom.

The show, which in its prime was nominated for Emmy Awards and Golden Globes, ran from 1976-1983. Cindy played the straight-laced Shirley Feeney opposite Penny Marshall's more libertine Laverne Defazio on both Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley. Their characters were roommates working at a bottling factory in Milwaukee during the 50s and 60s.

Penny Marshall passed away in 2018. Her brother, Garry Marshall, was a co-creator for the series. He died in 2016.

The show was beloved for its opening theme almost as much as its content, with Williams’ and Penny’s “schlemiel, schlimazel” chant set to become something of a cultural phenomenon.

Sad to hear the passing of Cindy Williams.

If there is an afterlife, may you and Penny be pouring a Shotz beer and Milk and Pepsi with Garry, David, Eddie and Phil. pic.twitter.com/MYERLOgZsG

— Danny Deraney (@DannyDeraney) January 31, 2023

It was this theme that American actress Rosario Dawson referenced in her tribute to Williams, responding to a clip from the show when she wrote, “singing this song with so much gratitude for both of you ladies. Absolute gems. United again.”

American filmmaker Nancy Meyers took to Instagram to pay tribute to the late actress, speaking of Cindy’s contribution to Father of the Bride, and her enduring impact, “so sad to hear about Cindy Williams. What few people know is that it was Cindy’s idea to remake Father of the Bride … She changed the course of my life and many others with that idea. And she never took credit for being responsible for that. Pretty unusual in Tinseltown.”

“It can all be accomplished, but you have to always stay yourself,” Cindy once said of her career in an interview with TVParty, “you have to keep your sense of humour. If you get knocked down, you have to get right back up and just keep going.”

Images: Getty

Footy legend sells deluxe home for $9 million

Footy star Shane Crawford and his partner Olivia Anderson have sold their home in Brighton, Victoria, after listing it last month.

The four-bedroom house was listed with a price guide of $9 million to $9.9 million, more than 10 years after the couple bought it for $3.05 million.

Industry sources told realestate.com.au that the final selling price was “in the vicinity of $9 million”.

The property attracted high-end buyers and a “couple of quite excited Hawks supporters” according to Fredman Property Group owner Joel Fredman.

Eventually, a family with three kids looking to upsize from their current Brighton home purchased the property.

Shane and Olivia completely renovated the home before the sale, but still maintained some traditional fittings.

“There’s the richness of the original Victorian period features - the marble fireplaces, the ceiling roses, the lacework, the verandah,” Mr Fredman said.

“The location is also so central to Brighton Grammar, Firbank Grammar and Bay Street. And there’s a reserve around the corner in Middle Crescent, which is a great place for families to be hanging out.”

The family sold the property after purchasing a property in Northern New South Wales last year, with Shane intending to spend more time there with Olivia and their sons Charlie, Ben, Jack, and Harry.

“Covid has brought a lot of change, and the family has made a sea change, so it’s a waste living in such a big house here,” Shane said.

“We have had 12 amazing years there and restored it back to its prime,” Olivia said, adding that the time had come to “pass on our home for another family to enjoy”.

“It’s the childhood home of the four boys, so it’s sad. But times have changed and we are so excited about the next chapter.”

The 1887-property, called the ‘Ellesmere’, was once home to Thomas Wilson, the mayor of Brighton.

Sitting on a 1477-square-metre lot, the property features a 20-metre pool, a tennis court, a gym, and a steam room.

Inside, the home boasts high ceilings, bay windows, and Tasmanian Oak parquetry flooring, as well as modern marble benches, and hydronic in-floor heating.

Listing the property during lockdown also didn’t seem to faze Mr Fredman, who told the Herald Sun he wasn’t worried since it was “the type of property you do wait for”.

“Listing it during lockdown gave me time to get to know the buyers, inform them of the details of the property and qualify them (as legitimate buyers),” he said. “So by the time inspections were allowed, I had everyone booked in for private tours.

“It’s an emotive property (the buyers) could be in for 10-20 years.”

Images: @flatoutmum / Instagram, realestate.com.au

Style tips for women over 50

Sydney-based Cindy Robson has enjoyed 25 successful years in the fashion industry. In that time she has styled women young and old, of all shapes, sizes and tastes. Cindy now focuses her time and expertise on professional styling, and has compiled a list of her top 13 flattering tips for over 50s. Here, she explains:

Tip 1: Find inspiration

The first question I ask my clients is, ‘What style are you inspired by?’. Some automatically know what they like, but are unsure of how to put styles together. Others simply reply: ‘That's what I've hired you for. I don't know anymore, I'm in my 50s and I've lost myself.’

Tip 2: Know your preferred style

Style doesn't come with a use-by date. It is helpful to have an image in mind of how you want to portray yourself. Nobody wants to look either ‘grandmotherly’ or (as much as I dislike the phrase) like ‘mutton dressed up as lamb’.

There are three styles/looks that I find most women over 50 prefer: classic/tailored, classic with an edge (my own style) and casual/relaxed. Depending on your style, base your wardrobe around the look you desire.

Tip 3: Avoid trends that don't flatter you

Keep up with current trends but don't overdo it head to toe – this will only age you. Do you love that hat or to-die-for pair of shoes or statement necklace, but wonder, ‘Am I too old to wear it?’ Of course you’re not! If you choose only one piece you will look on-trend and effortless.

Tip 4: Mix and match

You don't have to spend a fortune to look a million dollars. I suggest mixing and matching designer pieces with non-designer ones. For example, combine a great pair of designer jeans or shoes with a classic blazer and less expensive top.

Tip 5: Don't be afraid to wear colour

While it might feel ‘safe’ to cover up in black clothes, black and grey can be very ageing. If you feel uncomfortable wearing colour, start with small pieces like a bright woollen or silk scarf or a colourful beaded necklace, and work your way up to more significant items of clothing.

Tip 6: Upper arm cover-up

Most of us are aware of the dreaded ‘tuckshop mum’ arms that seem inevitable as we age, but I have a few tips to flatter the trouble spot. Unless your arms are extremely toned, cover up with 3/4 sleeves or cap sleeves. If you look hard enough you should be able to find styles that have a sleeve. For those situations where you can’t, there are plenty of boleros and jackets that you can pair with a sleeveless dress or top. Gone are the days when we had to match everything (like our mothers and grandmothers did). As long as what you choose complements the outfit, don't be afraid to experiment with colours, prints and textures.

Tip 7: Appropriate hem lines

No minis! I repeat: NO minis. Hem lines should ideally be on the knees (just below or above it), which also means no short shorts or Daisy Dukes. Having said this, if you find a gorgeous dress that sits above the knee (no minis remember) and you have great legs – go for it! Just make sure the dress doesn't show any cleavage as too much of both doesn't work, and wear stockings if suitable.

Tip 8: Shop around

Don't be nervous about walking into a store that seems too young for you. Walk in with confidence and look through the racks. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the number of fun staple pieces available that are appropriate for all ages.

Tip 9: Leggings are not pants

Always pair leggings with a longer top. If you love jeggins or skinny jeans, yes, you can wear them! Always combine them with a floaty top or shirt. Jeans should always be dark denim or solid black – no ripped jeans.

Tip 10: Invest in a classic style designer bag and sunglasses.

Think Audrey Hepburn or Coco Chanel. You're now at that age when you deserve it! A designer handbag or pair of sunglasses will last a lifetime and always be on-trend, making it a sound investment that never needs updating.

Tip 11: Find a good tailor

Not all styles will fit you perfectly and sizes will differ from store to store, and designer to designer. If you find a garment you absolutely adore and the fit isn't perfect, get a quote on having it altered to your measurements.

Tip 12: Invest in good underwear

Decent undergarments are the foundation of any outfit. A lot of my clients wear the wrong sized bra – too big in the back and too small in the cup. It creates a seesaw effect. Gravity will always do its thing, but if you are in the right fit this can be reduced and make you feel years younger. Who doesn't want that?

Tip 13: Say no to fake tan

Stay away from going too dark with a fake tan, as age spots and wrinkles will only become more pronounced. The best advice I have for women aged 50 plus is to wear sunscreen every day on top of your normal beauty routine.

Bonus Tip:

Last but not least, remember the most important accessory: your smile.

Who is your style icon for the over 50s woman?
